Work in progress. Collage, drawing.

This is a work in progress. A few weeks ago while on vacation, I was sitting in the harbor on a ship in NYC, we were waiting to leave and I saw the most amazing image looking out of the window at the bar, I took out my camera, took a few pictures and then saw I had a camera with NO CARD!! I'd left it home-so much for packing an hour before I leave on vacation. The city was outside of the window and overlaid on it in the glass reflection were the people on the upper deck playing chess with enormous pieces. The people looked like they were on top of the buildings with other people climbing the stairs, which you couldn't see, but it placed them in and around the buildings at different heights. The people were the size of the buildings, like huge giants amongst the towering buildings of New York. It was such a great image I wanted to keep it to take home and do a painting-when I have time-haha. So….without a camera I had to do a quick sketch so I could remember it. I did a sketch-y pic so I can figure it out. I want to do this on a big sheet of paper, this is just a sketch to see how I want it to look. So much for having my camera with me all the time! I wish I were more organized like normal people. I was probably packing the camera and thought of something else and got sidetracked when I was packing. It's okay though, this will just make me use my brain a bit more in figuring it out. The second picture is more of the same idea. Can't figure out yet how I want it to go.

Sharing one of my favorite ETSY stores with you!

The Willow Maiden

Kathy Pendleton Deck

I just love this woman!  She's totally nuts and so much fun!  Her work is really well done too.
Assemblage artist, artisan jewelry and crazy girl!

Here's a quote off her Facebook Page:
About KathyTake time to breathe!

I'm somewhat insane but harmless. But creativity boarderlines on insanity anyway. I'm a found objects artist so I am always digging around for stuff. Looking for friends who like to laugh and create. Everyone has creativity in their soul.

If you want a daily giggle, give her a friend request on her Facebook!  She gives me a grin just about every day!

Feeding your artistic soul

I've been so out of sync with my artist side the past month. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to relax or be happy. Of course the pressures of daily life can be part of it, but they're always there, then I realized I've been showing everyone else how to do art and forgot to do my own. With a to-do list a mile long, I sat at the breakfast table, picked up a pencil and a sheet of sketch paper, then began drawing. An hour and a half later the to-do list was still not started, I had the energy to face it. I had forgotten the importance of feeding my soul. My soul needs to be nourished, it's not a hobby, it's a true force within that requires fulfillment or the rest of my life becomes flat. When I'm not fulfilled the people around me suffer too. Now when I look out at the world I see can see the light again.

Searching for Art Supplies

I got a convo from a fellow Etsian and here is a quote from the message:
A fixative, with touline, exploded in my art room. What a nightmare! I lost 70 %+ of my supplies, shelving, a bowl my Grandfather had made, all creations finished and ready to be examined for perfection, all special orders, all creations in progress, all my paints, glues, brushes, found objects metals, min things, miniatures, beads, etc. That stuff ate through metal, plastic, and wood. I grabbed the glues and other spray cans as fast as I could (they were punctured) before they explode or leak.

My first message is to be careful of what you store in your home!! Toxic and homes don't go together. Learn what is safe to store in your house!!

I think one of the saddest things for a creative person is to be without supplies. Can you imagine? It would be a nightmare for me! I even take my supplies on vacation and have a bag ready to leave my house at all times so I can grab it on the run. Now imagine no glue sticks or a paint brush!! YIKES!!

Yesterday I went to the post office and got one of those "all you can fit in a box for one price" boxes and filled it with a mixture of supplies. Pencils, erasers, sculpey, sewing needles, fabric, trim, beads, wire, all kinds of things. I kept thinking what would I want to at least start, then began collecting. I'm lucky, I've been collecting and teaching for years so I have lots of supplies.

If you are lucky too and have anything you could spare and want to share please let me know and I can give you her address to mail something to her. Even a single paint brush would brighten her day. She can't make a claim on her insurance because the deductible is too high. Cleaning and repair is going to take all of her available cash. This would be such a nice thing if people could just send her a little package. I've been talking to her on ETSY for a while now and she is a really nice person. If you want to know what her store is I'll send you a link. If you want her address I can send that.

Wall Hangings by Marjorie Epp of Pennsylvania

Today I'm sharing a picture of a wall hanging an artist friend of mine made.  I'm going to interview her and give links to her shops next week.  She would like to get her shops in better shape before I show more of her work and give the links.  This is a preview.  Hopefully this week I'll have more information to share with you but I thought a little photo tease might be nice!

Happy Sunday!  I'm having a sale today in my supply shop and my jewelry shop.  Let me know you saw it here first and I'll add some fun charms to your order for free.
Don't forget to remind me of the offer so I don't forget!!

Bar Mitzvah making a present: Mezuzah

When Ben was about 5 years old, I met him as a student, in one of my art classes.   Absolutely one of the cutest, smartest, funniest kids I've known.  He drew pictures, complete with stories,  that he would pull from his mind.  At dinner, my family had to listen to me tell about this wonderful, talented child I had the pleasure of being with.    His mother, who also is multi talented, funny and just fun to be with, and I have become friends.  I’ve been invited to Ben’s Bar Mitzvah this month.  I’m making him a Mezuzah.  The pictures are in progress, I haven't applied the gold and copper leaf.  His mother is getting the prayer to place inside.

mezuzah |məˈzoŏzə| (also mezuza)

noun ( pl. mezuzahs or mezuzas or mezuzot or mezuzoth |məˈzoŏzōt|)

a parchment inscribed with religious texts and attached in a case to the doorpost of a Jewish house as a sign of faith.

ORIGIN mid 17th cent.: from Hebrew mĕzūzāh ‘doorpost.’

I've been reduced to a bag woman

Okay, I'm a professional artist, translation:  people are now paying me enough for my art, jewelry and handbags to support myself- but isn't that why I got married>?  His money supports us, mine is whatever money or on responsible days~my retirement fund!  Even though I have 4 online stores and I work as an art teacher part time, even  sell my jewelry wholesale now!!!  I am still the maid, cook, chauffeur, care giver, dog walker, poop picker upper!, laundress etc, you can fill in the rest as I'm sure you have your list!  Popping a tube of paint is directly causes a  "Mary, ..."  or the phone rings..."Mom..." or someone stops by because I'm not working, can't be- I'm at home.

I read a great article about creative people, we're disorganized, scattered, etc!  No I'm not, I just have to fit it in between the 90 other demands of the day.  My husband asked at breakfast why I was soldering on the kitchen counter?  Uh, last night  they all wanted a big dinner- soldering had to be done, can't I do that while I watch a vat of spaghetti sauce simmer?  Made perfect sense to me!  I didn't get any flux in the pan!

By working like this  I  am still able to cook, clean, be healthy in my home-if you don't clean that mold will kill you!...hmmm, wonder what kind of medium I could mix it with to make...I digress.  I’m always multi tasking, just  moving the art with me.  I've become a bag woman!  I have great tote bags, saved over the years from every charity, club or wherever they seem to come from, now I have a new GREEN stash of grocery totes to pull into service.  All  the bags have glue, scissors, thread, needles, yarn, crochet hook, knitting needles and about four ongoing projects.  When I leave a room, a bag goes with me, when I go in the car, sometimes two bags go with me.  I am never without my projects now.  I went on vacation one time and forgot a bag and had to go to the store just so I could have some art supplies with me.  I wouldn’t be comfortable otherwise.  Now before I go I pack the art supplies a week in advance, my clothes an hour before I leave for the plane.  I have my priorities right!  Gotta go, which bag will I take with me?
